      Dear Christoph Bergmann,
You wrote that perl would be the program to use. This would be written in the "Page" section of the database correct?

comparing user entries with "correct answers" in a translation database

I am setting up a database to help Japanese people learn English.

First, I write a sentence in Japanese and show several choices for the English translatation. (I have that part.) I have done that using the "option field".

Second, I would like to be able to tell the user whether or not it is the correct choice.

So I would like to compare the user answer with the "correct answer" and let the user know whether it is correct or not.

Can someone please explain how this could be done? If so, what programming language is necessary?

Or is there an easier way to do this? Always looking for an easier way :)

Thanks in advance for any help!

I wonder how this works ;-) I mean: If you use the "option" field and the user sends the form I would think he will then make a new entry in the database. Do you work with <do action=all ...> ?

But its an interesting approach. You could catch the user input before its written to the database. Additionally you need a field where the correct answer is stored and compare it with the input... But I think there are some problems, i.g. how to know which sentence was asked before... Mmhh, not that simple ;-)

      Perl

      > Or is there an easier way to do this?

I don't think its possible without programming.

Maybe I'll find the time tomorrow to help you with a little script for your problem ;-)

I will leave the database as is so you can see what I have done so far, its not much but I just want to have a foundation to build on. The site works now. I didnt delete the default fields, i had a problem viewing the last field in the web page, so i moved the author field to the last position Hmmm?(@_@)?. If you would like to view the database itself i can send you the password, since i can change the password later.

Im wondering about this database too, i dont have much experience with database management on the web (MS Access is a bear to wrestle!) but am willing to put some time into this, learn and make it work. Im reading some online guides about database admin and the documentation.

After the user makes an entry, it is in the database, then I want to compare their answers (either one by one or in groups of 3, like i have set up now). I dont know what time would be best to check before it is entered, or just after.

      - How could i draw the link or make the connection between the answer database (ETS_Answer_Database) and the problem database (ETS_Database)?

      - Could I do something with the "Hidden" field and keep it all in the same database??? For example, if it matches the Hidden field, it displays "Yes, your choice is correct!" or if it does not match "No, your choice is not correct!"

      - How can I catch the user input before its written to the database?

In the future, people with portable phones will use this database here in Japan. I tested the site with 2 different phones from different companies (for compatibility) and it worked ok, so i thought a "radio button" or a "option drop down list" would make choosing easier. I will also try to tier this for beginners, intermediate and advanced levels.
