    Re: Problems finding baseportal server

      Yahell strikes again? :)

It only seems to be with large story inputs into one field. I haven't checked for a while -- it may be fine now.

We haven't had any downtimes in the last time and your page looks ok to me. Maybe it was a problem of your access provider?

    Re: Problems finding baseportal server

Well, we have some limitations regarding memory and the runtime of a process to prevent the server of inifite looped code and stuff - but it blocks very very late, so normally you won't get problems with this... How large are your stories? More than, lets say, 20 MB ?

Re: (Christoph) Problems finding baseportal server

The largest single database entry in one field for a story is currently 500 kB. I couldn't even access this entry through baseportal directly yesterday to edit it so I divided the entry into four entries of about 125 kB each, then deleted the original entry.

Another database entry of 350 kB caused issues as well.

Now I can access but I'm still having problems running a couple of database queries templates and submission forms -- link here to automatically size the entire database for field "Story".
      http://baseportal.com/cgi-bin/baseportal.pl?htx=/TheOneRing/Story_archives/size

I've revised this now to include the sizing in the submission form validation to, hopefully, avoid problems -- really no need to size the entire database field every time one story is submitted.

You are welcome to try to enter a test story through the Submit a Story form link here to test -- no worries about visibility on the site.
      http://baseportal.com/baseportal/TheOneRing/Story_archives/Input_archive

The entire story database only has about 7 MB of data with 118 entries. There is also a relational database "archive" which links author and title fields to this story database. There are 66 total stories in this database corresponding to the 118 story entries -- many stories have multiple chapters submitted over different times.

I'm researching to see if I can make the programming smarter and more concise but I'm not sure why I can't access the database directly from baseportal when the field is large.

I don't want to cause any problems with baseportal. Please advise...

      Thanks,
      TheOneRing

Re: (Christoph) Problems finding baseportal server

I see - the process runs short of memory when you upload too much and just stops the execution. Thats the reason for the error...

Its not a problem for the server, so don't worry if it happens.

But I think you cannot do anything to prevent it - its a limitation for the upload. I guess the only solution is to split the entries...

Thanks for looking into this. I will figure a work around for size limitations or something.

Other story sites do this without a problem though. Is it a time out on baseportal then? Would a purchased version still have the same problem?

Re: (Christoph) Problems finding baseportal server

Its a knowingly limitation to control the free service ;-)

If it would be a problem with the purchase version depends on the server you run it. On a normal webspace server (which you share with hundreds other users) you normally have such limits as well. If you set up your own server you can set the limits as you like...
